Breast Cancer Screening Methods

Clinical Breast Exam- The clinical breast exam is an exam to be performed as a part of your regular medical checkup by a health care provider. This exam includes a visual examination and a hands on exam of the entire breast and underarm area. This exam is recommended for ages 20-39 at least every three years or yearly for age 40 and older.

Mammogram- A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast to be done with a special X-ray machine designed for this purpose.  A mammogram can find many cancers before they are felt on an exam.  A screening mammogram should be performed at age 40 and older every year. Women under age 40 with either a family history of breast cancer or other concerns about personal risk should talk to their health care provider about when to start getting  mammograms. For information on free mammograms for those who qualify contact PCHHH at (225) 638-5717 or email fmckneelypchh@yahoo.com

Breast Self-Exam (BSE) – The BSE is a tool that may help you learn what is normal for you. This exam includes looking at and feeling your breast. Most women will typically have a pattern of lumpiness in their breasts which is normal but if you feel any change or a new lump in your breast or underarms, your doctor should exam the area.  BSE should be performed monthly. For information on how to perform a BSE contact Pointe Coupee Homebound Health Services and Pointe Coupee Hospice at (225) 638-5717 or email fmckneelypchh@yahoo.com.
