Pointe Coupee Homebound Health Services has provided professional home health care to Pointe Coupee Parish residents, as well as to residents in parts of Iberville, Avoyelles,West Baton Rouge, West Feliciana parishes, for over 28 years. Pointe Coupee Hospice is a dedicated local hospice agency, established in 2001, and covering the same service areas. Pointe Coupee Hospice has easy accessibility to these areas allowing more efficient patient care. Both agencies are Medicare and Medicaid certified and service many private insurances policy holders.

The Longest Loss: Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia
POINTE COUPEE HOSPICE TO HOST HOSPICE FOUNDATION OF AMERICA’S ANNUAL NATIONAL Living With Grief® program. Each year the Hospice Foundation of America (HFA) presents a nationally recognized distance learning program to more than 125,000 people in 2,000 communities. For more than a decade, HFA’s educational events have been instrumental in educating healthcare professionals and families on issues affecting end-of-life care. This program provides an opportunity for a wide variety of professionals to share and exchange ideas and obtain continuing education credits. This program is practical for all levels of professions – entry level, intermediate or advanced. The information provided by the expert panel will be useful to nurses, social workers, counselors, nursing home administrators, case managers, funeral directors, marriage and family therapists, caregivers, and those working in palliative and hospice care, long-term care, or home care.
This year’sLiving With Grief® Program focuses on The Longest Loss: Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia. When the diagnosis is Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia, grief doesn’t wait for death. Grieving can begin in the doctor’s office when patients and families receive confirmation of illness. Over a span of what may be a decade, multiple losses associated with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia become a pervasive part of everyday life for millions of patients, their families and friends. After the death, survivors’ grief may be complicated by the nature of a lengthy disease process that has changed their relationship with the deceased. Through a combination of candid, compelling interviews and live, in-studio discussion, experts will identify how medical and social service professionals can best help patients, families and themselves cope with loss and grief associated with these progressive illnesses. Moderated by Frank Sesno, Director of the School of Media and Public Affairs at The George Washington University, the program will be shown Thursday, June 11th at Pointe Coupee Hospice, 350 Hospital Road, New Roads, LA 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Participants are welcome to bring their own lunch. Snacks and drinks will be provided.
Mr. Sesno will lead the panel of noted authorities that includes: Charles Corr, PhD, former Chair of the International Work Group on Death, Dying, and Bereavement and current caregiver; Kenneth J. Doka, PhD, MDiv, Professor of Gerontology, College of New Rochelle and participant in 22 Living with Grief® programs; Nancy Pearce, LISW-CP, licensed gerontological social worker with expertise in communicating and connecting effectively with persons with dementia; Peter V. Rabins, MD, MPH, Director, Geriatric Psychiatry Program, Johns Hopkins and co-author of “The 36 Hour Day,” a widely used guide for lay caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias; and Kathie Supiano, PhD, LCSW, FT, F-GSA, Associate Professor, and director of Caring Connections: A Hope and Comfort in Grief Program at the University of Utah College of Nursing.
